Yava: Renaming and Rebranding East Bali Cashews for National and International Retail

Naming, brand strategy, visual identity, and packaging for National and Global Export

East Bali Cashews had a product quality problem that was actually a name problem. The cashews were genuinely good, sourced from East Indonesian farmers, made with care, with a story worth telling. But the brand name was doing the opposite of what a healthy snack brand needs to do in modern retail. "East Bali" placed the brand firmly in tourism souvenir territory, the kind of thing you buy at the airport on the way home. "Cashews" capped the entire business at a single ingredient. Neither word helped the brand compete on a supermarket shelf in Jakarta, Singapore, or Sydney.

The rename to Yava was the first strategic decision. The name needed to carry no geographic limitation, no single-product association, and no barrier to international registration. It also needed to feel warm, human, and Indonesian without leaning on Bali as a tourism shorthand. The Bali connection was preserved differently, a "Smile from Bali" stamp on every pack, a hospitality signal that communicated origin and character without confining the brand to the island.

Komunikasia led the full process: naming, brand strategy, visual identity, and packaging system. The portfolio at launch included cashews, granola, popcorn, and puff , diverse enough that the visual system needed architecture, not just aesthetics. The dominant corporate orange was a deliberate category disruption. Healthy snack packaging in Indonesia and internationally tends toward muted earth tones and craft textures. Yava's orange made the brand immediately visible on shelf and immediately recognisable across a product range that would keep expanding.

The target was urban health-conscious buyers in Indonesia and export markets, consumers who make purchasing decisions on lifestyle fit as much as ingredient lists, and who respond to brands that look like they belong on an international shelf rather than a local market stall.

Yava is now stocked in all major national supermarkets across Indonesia, retail chains across Southeast Asia, and in Australia through Coles and Woolworths, a distribution outcome that would have been unreachable under a name built around a single origin and a single nut.
